Laura and Hannah have been hosting IndieMission since the end of our first season! It was actually born of our first supporters, indie authors! Indie authors were our first followers, the first people talking to us about Wheel of Time, the first people smashing that subscribe button. They were the first ones doing a deep dive with us, one book at a time. So we created IndieMission, where we spent one month focusing on an Indie author’s book! We hosted giveaways, and invited them on to chat with us if they were interested! We’ve gotten to read so many amazing books this way, and some of OWWR all time favorites!
Now, eight seasons in, countless books later, we are starting out tenth #IndieMission. We have learned so much about the publishing world and Indie authors specifically! So we want to do something special for our tenth Indie! We want to highlight a completed series by an Indie Author! We will be diving into a new Indie series, one book at a time!
So next week, join us on our Bonus Episode as we host on the podcast a knock-out round where we will randomly choose who we will be reading in from September until the end of their series!!!

To reawaken the Rill and save their world, its ruler Marc Frederick must find a way to win over Dorilian Sordaneon, the last scion of the divine house that once controlled the Rill. Unfortunately, Dorilian hates him. And his family. And… everything. Dorilian may or may not save the world. You may or may not love him. You just know you’re in for a good, rousing story.
The Lost Humanity Series by H.S. Kallinger: We’ve heard the hero origin stories, and we’ve heard from the villains, too. But seldom does the story revolve around the people supporting our heroes and villains. It’s not a hero’s faithful sidekick. It’s not a sniveling sycophant. Zack Henderson is an ordinary guy until the villain gets his hands on him. One trauma leads to another, and the abuse and rewards take him to a path of moral disengagement.
The Cruel Gods Trilogy by Trudie Skies: Cruel gods rule the steam-powered city of Chime, demanding worship and tribute from their mortal subjects. Kayl lost her faith in them long ago, and now seeks to protect vulnerable and downtrodden mortals from their gods’ whims. We follow Chime and the cruel gods through this steampunk trilogy!
The Gus Chronichles by Karryn Nagel: Nico relishes the quiet life working as a transgender bonsai bodyguard. But during a chance encounter one night amidst the aftermath of a territory dispute, he meets ,b>Brant, an excitable, good-natured cookie guard, and the two strike an instant friendship. They form an irresistible bond with Gustopher, a baby gargoyle in need, setting off on a thrilling adventure to care for Gus.
The Obsidian Path Series by Michael R. Fletcher: A broken man, Khraen awakens alone and lost. His stone heart has been shattered, littered across the world. With each piece, he regains some small shard of the man he once was. He follows the trail, fragment by fragment, remembering his terrible past. There was a woman. There was a sword. There was an end to sorrow. Khraen walks the obsidian path throughout the rest of this series as he finds gods, battles grief, and more.
The Dragon Spirits Trilogy by L.L. Macrae: Fenn’s first and only memory is finding himself in the middle of a forest, face to face with a dragon spirit mocking him, all knowledge gone but his name. His only hope for answers is Calidra—a woman living on the edge of the world with her partner. Forced to return home when her father dies, Calidra has put off facing her estranged mother for seven years, and she begrudgingly helps Fenn, forging papers for him so he can avoid the Queen’s Inquisitors. Her mother is the least of her worries when they discover an ancient enemy is rising again. It should be impossible with the Iron Crown in power—and Fenn is terrified he might unwittingly be playing a part in the war’s resurgence.

Learn to Howl Trilogy by Jennifer R. Donohue: When a football player follows her home from an illicit party, preacher’s daughter Allie unmasks a secret her mama has been trying to pray away for almost seventeen years. Mennik Thorn Series by Patrick Samphire: Mennik (Nik) Thorn is a freelance mage, happy to scrape a living breaking simple curses and hunting ghosts, all the while trying to keep out of the way of the city’s corrupt high mages. But trouble finds Nik like flies find shit, and sometimes all that stands between his city and disaster is one second-rate mage.
Iamos Trilogy by Lyssa Chiavari: A time travel adventure set in dual timelines on Mars—one timeline in the near future, after the planet’s been colonized by people from Earth, and the other thousands of years in the past, when ancient life existed on the Red Planet. Mysterious Fields Series by Celia Lake: Thessaly is engaged to be married to the shining son of one of the greatest families in the country. Vitus has just returned from a grand tour, ready to cap off his apprenticeship as a talisman maker. When Thessaly and Vitus meet at a costume ball, there’s an immediate spark between them. Thessaly’s marriage agreements specifically permit that, so long as she’s discreet. Certainly, there’s no barrier to a friendship or magical collaboration. Vitus, for his part, is charmed by her intelligence, creativity, and eye for crafting magic.
The Hex Files by Kelly Garcia: Forty-year-old Bella Hexley thought she left magic behind for good. She built a perfectly ordinary life—law school, marriage, motherhood. Then her husband blindsided her with divorce, taking their house, their savings, and every illusion of stability she had. The only thing she kept? Custody of her daughter—if she can prove she can support her. With bills piling up and no job offers, Bella returns to the Enchanted District of Chicago and doing all she can to manage magical clientele (and potential love interests).
Songs of Sefate Series by Sarah Chorn: From the moment the first settler dug a well and struck a lode of shine, the world changed. Now, everything revolves around that magical oil. What began as a simple scouting expedition becomes a life-changing ordeal for Arlen Esco. The son of a powerful mogul, Arlen is kidnapped and forced to confront uncomfortable truths his father has kept hidden. In his hands lies a decision that will determine the fate of everyone he loves—and impact the lives of every person in Shine Territory. The daughter of an infamous saboteur and outlaw, Cassandra has her own dangerous secrets to protect. When the lives of those she loves are threatened, she realizes that she is uniquely placed to change the balance of power in Shine Territory once and for all. Secrets breed more secrets. Somehow, Arlen and Cassandra must find their own truths in the middle of a garden of lies.
